The medical definition of anxiety – per MedicineNet is as follows –
“Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension and fear, characterized by physical symptoms such as palpitations, sweating, and feeling of stress”
Anxiety can also keep you up at nite, hence causing fatigue, irritability, can’t concentrate, and making everyday task and ability to work harder.
Everyone has stress in their life at some level and can lead to anxiety. There are huge differences in normal anxiety and abnormal anxiety.
Normal anxiety comes and goes and is usually associated with a situation or an event. Think of it as an emotion.
It could be a moment of happiness, such as a wedding, a birth, promotion,or reuniting with someone special. You are excited but could provoke anxiety.
Normal anxiety is beneficial, it is to be short term, think of it like a guest coming to visit, yes it can elicit excitement at first, but then, well, it’s time to leave.
Here is another example of beneficial anxiety. Are you familiar with the term “fight or flight?”
It’s also called “the acute stress response” it’s a mechanism that prepares the body for one of two sensational/reaction to a feeling of perceived threat – to fight or to run “fight or flight”
Then there is abnormal anxiety – this is chronic. It is not situational. Chronic anxiety can flat out control one’s life if not treated/managed.
We often hear family members telling their loved one that suffers from chronic anxiety “take a deep breath, let it out, , just forget about it “ That may be helpful if it were situational but not for chronic, it’s not that easy, regardless how well meaning.
Wouldn’t life be so much simpler if that were the case?
It makes me think of Dorothy of Wizard of Oz “just click your heels” mentality.
Unfortunately, chronic anxiety impacts not just the person having the chronic anxiety, it often spills into all involved and everyone becomes frustrated. A vicious cycle.
Hence, this article to emphasize the importance of education. “You don’t know, what you don’t know”
