Does Medical Marijuana Help Diabetes?
Hello guys ,
Today’s topic is does medical marijuana help Diabetes? It certainly has proven to beneficial for many others illness and disorders.
So do you think medical marijuana helps diabetes? As usual let’s learn more about the illness at hand.
What is Diabetes exactly ? Some of our patients will say “it’s when you got sugar” or it’s when you can’t eat sugar and you have to have shots “
Some of our patients have said “ when its real bad you need dialysis or I don’t know what it is but my cousin had to have his foot amputated “
We even had someone tell us “it’s when you need an inhaler“
Hence, mine and Scarlett’s goal is to educate, educate, educate, and then educate again. There is so much to teach , and address so many misconceptions.
- The definition of Diabetes is as follows -per WHO-World Health Organization
- Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease caused by inherited and/or acquired deficiency in production of insulin by the pancreas, or by the ineffectiveness of the insulin produced. Such a deficiency results in increased concentrations of glucose in the blood, which in turn damage many of the body systems, in particular the blood vessels and nerves.”
- Ok! Are you asking yourself what in the world does this mean?
Let’s break it down to-Diabetes Mellitus
Guys we need glucose “sugar” Why you ask?
Think of it like this – our brain must have glucose to function, period.
Glucose is the main source of “ energy “ for the cells in our body.It is needed for each cell in the body.Pretty important wouldn’t you agree ?
What are causes of Diabetes you ask?
Simply put it depends on which type of Diabetes do you have. Let’s review. Here are some factors that signal an increased risk related to type 1 Diabetes-
Where you live-Sweden and Finland you have a reported higher risk
People with elevated blood pressure (Hypertension)
Weight definitely puts you at high risk.
Our cells become resistant to insulin, with increased fatty tissue.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Sedentary life style ,meaning we all need to be more active and move.
Let’s talk about symptoms per American Diabetes Association
We will start with hypoglycemia. Often people will say my sugar is low .Also known as low
Now throughout the day it is normal and to be expected that our glucose levels vary .Often times we are not aware of these changes because they are remaining in a healthy range.
Reasons for low glucose-
Exercising too long or too hard
When glucose levels are below healthy range is when hypoglycemia must be addressed and PDQ.
You may hear the terms insulin reaction or insulin shock when referring to low blood glucose.
What does this look like?
Well we can tell you it happens fast.
So here we go with symptoms- impaired vision, shaky, clammy, nausea, hunger, headaches,
anxiety, fatigued, crying out in sleep, seizures, vertigo, turning pale, irritability, increased heart rate ,or feeling numbness in your cheeks, tongue or lips.
Guys this is serious. If our brain is deprived of glucose it can lead to coma or worse.
Do not play around or ignore these symptoms.
So what do you need to do when these symptoms occur? Like we said, respond PDQ!
If you are on insulin and your glucose drops, DO NOT inject insulin as this will lower the glucose level. We know that sounds like a duh, but we have had patients panic and give themselves insulin.
Please do not confuse insulin with Glucagon. Glucagon injection raises your glucose.
When glucose is low you will need to eat or drink something with sugar.Regular sodas, orange juice, hard candy, or peanut butter, something that acts quickly.
It is important that you record these happenings so your health team can have an accurate picture to better address your needs.
So what is hyperglycemia?
You nailed it“ it’s when your glucose is too high.
Is this dangerous? Indeed it is! Why?
Let’s talk about what happens when your glucose it too high.
Like we stated earlier our body needs glucose for “energy.”
When our glucose is too high it means our body is not properly using or is not making the hormone called insulin. This hormone is produced by the pancreas.
Symptoms of hyperglycemia-
Increase thirst or hunger
Hallmark symptoms-fruity smelling breath, short of breath and dry mouth .
So how do you safely bring down glucose without dropping too low?
Increase your heart rate for 15 minutes as this will increase your insulin response.
Cheese and almonds are a great source of protein. Protein stabilizes glucose.
Unless you have heart problems or kidney problems drink that water, a lot of water as it can dilute your glucose and cause you to urinate a lot of it out.
Some people may already have been on fast acting insulin, and you would administer per your doctors orders. Insulin injections quickly lower your glucose, so be sure to recheck your glucose about 30 minutes afterwards to ascertain glucose levels. You do not want to go to low.
Complications of Diabetes Mellitus
Kidney damage -nephropathy
Eye damage -retinopathy
Hearing loss/ changes
Hypertension- high blood pressure
These are just a few.
Best plan of treatment?
How do we prevent?
Let’s talk about it!
1.Exercise is extremely important for preventing diabetes.
2.80% of diabetics are overweight and excess weight has been shown to contribute to the development of diabetes. In fact just losing weight and exercising can often completely control all symptoms of diabetes.
3.Avoid eating foods made with sugar, bleached (white) flour and other refined carbohydrates.
4.(Eat lots of fiber,) which is found in raw fruits and vegetables, beans, whole grains
5.Smoking is not only associated with the development of diabetes.
6.Preventing diabetes means cutting way back on alcoholic beverages which contain quickly absorbed carbohydrates.
These are all things that can help prevent diabetes.
Now we want to discuss “Does Medical Marijuana Help Diabetes“
There are a several of studies that show cannabis helps improve blood sugar control and helps with weight loss.
Cannabis appears to improve carbohydrate metabolism in users.
In a study published in the American Journal of Medicine in July 2013. This study “The Impact of Marijuana Use on Glucose, Insulin, and Insulin Resistance among US.”
They found 16% lower fasting insulin levels. And 17% lower insulin resistance. And a significant amount of proof that marijuana use help loose weight. a suitable treatment option for type 2 diabetes is that insulin resistance is a great contribution to the disease.
The anti-inflammatory ability can improve the body’s sugar metabolism, suppress the short inflammation reaction to sugar ingestion, and provide many other health benefits to prevent complications that result from type 2 diabetes.
And even as I write this and you read this Israel the head of World Research in Medical Marijuana Research. Are researching this information. And are trying to find a cure for diabetes along with Harvard Medical School.
But current studies show a real benefit in the use of medical marijuana. And as always we advocate you talk honestly with your physician. Before use.
